Frederick Hurst was 21 years old when he enlisted in the 48th New York Infantry on 24 July 1861. Hurst was born in Nottingham, England 3 July 1842. While he musterered into the 48th at Brooklyn, New York, his residenced was not listed, although he is believed to have been a resident of Brooklyn. On 27 August 1861, he joined 'E' company as a 1st lieutenant. He was promoted to captain on 26 January 1863 and assumed command of 'K' company on 28 February 1863. He was wounded in the chest and captured during the assault on Fort Wagner, South Carolina on 18 July 1863. He died of his wounds at Charleston, South Carolina on 31 July, and is buried in Beauford, South Carolina.
