Proposal to Erect Union Monument at Olustee

At the 9 May 2015 CSO annual meeting, a representative of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection-Division of Recreation and Parks was asked about the status of the Union monument. His reply was that any decision regarding the monument may not be made until the publication of the next Unit Management Plan for the Olustee Battlefield State Historic Site. This 'plan' is forumulated once every ten years. The next plan is due in 2018. At that time, public comments to the plan will be requested.

At the 10 January 2105 CSO meeting, a representative of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection-Division of Recreation and Parks stated that no decision regarding the Union monument had yet been made.

The bill regarding the construction of monuments in Florida State Parks (see below) did not pass in the past session of the Florida Legislature. As a result, a decision regarding the proposed Union monument will be made by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection-Division of Recreation and Parks. As of this date, no information regarding this decision has been announced.

A bill regarding the construction of monuments in Florida State Parks was submitted in the Florida State Legislature. As such, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection-Division of Recreation and Parks has tabled its decision on the proposed Union Monument pending legislative action on this bill.

"The Florida Park Service has been asked by representatives of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War to place a monument in the park to commemorate the Union participants in the battle. We continue to review comments and suggestions from stakeholders. At this time, a decision has not been made regarding this monument.
