Oliver Willcox Norton served as an enlisted man in the
Eighty-third Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment during part of the
war. He was then commissioned as a lieutenant in the Eight
United States Colored Troops on November 10, 1863. The following quote is
from the book Brothers in Arms, by William C. Davis.
"The first thing in the morning is drill, then drill, then drill
again. Then drill, drill, a little more drill. Then drill, and
lastly drill. Between drills, we drill, and sometimes stop to
eat a little and have roll-call."
--- Oliver Norton, 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry
